EFTPS setup: check eligibility before planning a payment.
Start before the deposit deadline and keep enrollment evidence separate from tax-account records. If timing is tight, confirm an official alternative instead of assuming enrollment will finish immediately.
Direct answer
Can an individual still open a new EFTPS account?
No. The IRS no longer accepts new EFTPS enrollments from individual taxpayers. Existing users can still use EFTPS for now. For most individual taxes, check IRS Online Account; Direct Pay also supports additional forms. The up-to-five-business-day enrollment guidance applies only where enrollment remains available.

Checklist controls
Identify taxpayer type and whether an EFTPS account already exists.
For a new individual payment, confirm the supported tax form in Online Account or Direct Pay.
For an eligible enrollment, leave up to five business days and schedule payment separately.
Keep the payment acknowledgement and match the debit to the bank statement.
Example: an individual with no EFTPS account and a payment due tomorrow should check a supported IRS payment route now. Waiting five business days to open an unavailable account does not solve the deadline.
