First apartment checklist: move-in cash and monthly costs

Separate cash due before move-in from your ongoing rent budget. Use a worked example, lease questions and a copyable first-apartment checklist.

Direct answer

Can I afford the move as well as the monthly rent?

Run two separate checks: money needed before you receive the keys, and money left after a normal month of bills. Passing one does not guarantee the other. A refundable deposit still ties up cash while you live there. List each quoted charge with its due date and refund terms, then compare the total with money actually available by that date. Keep an emergency reserve separate from furniture spending.

An original move-in cash example

ItemIllustrative cash needed
First month’s rent$1,200; include it once, even if paid before the move.
Refundable security deposit$1,200; cash unavailable for other bills while held.
Moving transport and setup$250 transport + $150 utility setup/deposit = $400.
Basic essentials$300; separate necessary purchases from later upgrades.

These invented amounts total $3,100 before moving. With $4,000 available and a separately protected $1,000 emergency reserve, only $3,000 is available for the move: a $100 gap. Next, test the ordinary month. Rent $1,200 + utilities $180 + internet $50 + insurance $20 = $1,450 in housing costs before food, transport, debt and savings. Do not charge the already-paid first month twice in the move-month ledger. Add application charges, pet costs, parking or overlapping rent only if they actually apply.

Frequently asked questions

Is a security deposit a monthly cost or spendable savings?

For this cash plan it is a separate amount tied up, not recurring rent and not available savings. Any eventual return depends on the lease, condition, applicable rules and deductions. Do not fund the new move with an old deposit until the money is actually available.
